Protect Gas Exchange Before Restarting the Filter
When powered circulation stops, gas exchange can fall, but a stopped filter or a fish breathing at the surface does not by itself prove an oxygen shortage. Keep suitable backup aeration running — a battery-powered air pump or powerhead where you have one — and keep the surface moving (Bulk Reef Supply). Answering "how to oxygenate a fish tank without electricity" comes down to those same options; with neither device, rapid hand stirring is a stopgap. Seek experienced aquatic help when livestock are distressed; no backup method guarantees survival (Fluval).
Make the Filter Safe Before You Plug It In
Inspect and work on the filter only while it is unplugged. Do not touch wet, energized equipment, and do not reconnect a plug, cord, or socket that is wet or damaged; arrange safe isolation and get qualified electrical help instead. No DIY wiring or household electrical repairs.
Match the Restart to Your Model
Priming steps are model-specific: identify the filter type and follow that manufacturer's sequence rather than reusing another filter's procedure.
Filter type | First restart checkpoint | Stop if |
|---|---|---|
HOB, AquaClear A-series | A-series manual: fill the case, lowest flow setting, plug in, allow 30-45 seconds of priming | No flow after the manual's no-start checks |
Canister, such as Fluval 07-series | Follow that model's priming method; the Fluval 07 manual says not to manually prefill its canister, and other models may differ | The canister does not fill, flow stops, or you find leaks |
Internal or other power filter | Check water level, intake and impeller against that model's manual | The motor runs hot, rattles, or the manual is unclear |
HOB Filters: Fill, Then Prime
Fluval's AquaClear A-series instructions say to fill the case completely with water, set the flow control lever to its lowest start-up setting, plug in, and allow 30-45 seconds for priming before readjusting flow (AC110 manual). If it does not start, work through that manual's starter checks — cord fully seated, case full, intake stem seated on the impeller cover — and clean the impeller assembly if the motor is noisy. Do not move this case-filling step to any other filter.
Canisters: Follow the Model's Priming Sequence
For a Fluval 07-series canister, prime exactly as that manual directs. Its instruction not to manually prefill the canister during reassembly applies only to that model and its priming method; other canister models may differ. Check your own manual rather than borrowing the AquaClear HOB procedure. Follow the manual's fill requirement before plugging in; a dry run can damage the motor. If it still will not fill or flow, follow model guidance instead of repeatedly cycling a hot or damaged motor (Fluval 07 Series manual).
After Restart: Verify Flow, Leaks and Water
Watch the return flow and check hoses, valve and cover for leaks before leaving the filter unattended. Once power is back, test ammonia and nitrite on a heavily stocked tank and consider a partial water change; our aquarium water quality guide explains what those readings mean. In a reef tank with confirmed ammonia concerns, the reef ammonia guide is a separate resource for that situation, not a diagnosis or treatment plan for every outage. Prolonged stagnant water needs context and experienced guidance; there is no automatic safe-restart clearance.
Media Care During and After an Outage
- Skip feeding during the outage to reduce waste load.
- Do not open and rinse the canister for every outage; follow your model's safe, unplugged maintenance guidance and use gentle media care only when needed.
- Preserve the biofilm; do not assert that bacteria die after a fixed interval.
- Do not replace all of the biological media by default.
Restart Mistakes That Cause the Most Damage
- Carrying the AquaClear HOB case-filling step over to a canister filter.
- Running a filter dry, or touching or reconnecting wet, energized equipment.
- Repeatedly cycling a hot or damaged motor, or opening an electrical housing.
- Replacing all biological media by default.
- Treating a humming motor as proof that water is flowing.
